Today my skirt would not cooperate. I had just washed/dryed it and usually that makes things a bit tighter than usual. So I went about my day as usual. It didn't occur to me until I was on my lunch break, filling my car up at the gas station, that my skirt had turned itself around. This is a very good sign, my friends, because you see, I just purchased this skirt a month or so ago in a smaller size than I would normally have worn.
This also means that this outfit would not have sufficed, should I have gone on a safari. Which was my original plan, but work got in the way.

The past few months have been a whirlwind of work, work trips, vacations, work, work, and more work. I am fully committed to keeping this blog up, mainly as a place to host my daily outfit photos. I was going to do a timeline of outfits past, but since most of you readers are also my friend on Facebook, I will post today's picture only:

Cardigan: Old Navy; Cat Print Shirt: Forever21; Skirt: Macy's (forgot the brand); belt and boots: Torrid.

My goals for this blog:
1. Track my weight loss through daily pictures. I'm about 20lbs down since the beginning of August, so it's neat to see the changes in the clothese I wear.
2. Help others find ways to be more creative with what they wear.
3. Motivate other people to post their outfit photos so I don't look like such a narcissisistic clothes horse.
4. Purchase a full length mirror for my house so no one has to look at the walls of my bathroom anymore.

With these four goals, I hope to keep you entertained. If I get enough readers, I'll start posting more personal stuff, but for now this should suffice. I mean come on, how many of you have ever seen the inside of my work bathroom? I'm breaking barriers here, people!

Ruffles and Boots (again)

So Sunday I ended up wearing nothing but my black skinny jeans and a Steeler's jersey all evening, thanks to the Superbowl. I didn't count it as one of my outfits because I didn't put the jersey in my 30 because when else would I wear it?

Monday I didn't leave the house because I was too busy crying over their loss against the Packers. I kid. I was crying because I had a mini hangover from too many Hefeweisen.

I'm back on track today though! Dress- Macy's

If you look closely, you can see the (blurry) pair of shoes sitting on my gym bag. I need to get these fixed so I can wear them a lot because they're my favorite. I got up early this morning and actually "did" my hair. I'm getting used to the new haircut, so I've been wearing my hair back a lot.
And, due to request, here is a sneak peek of the dress I'm going to wear to the Vampire Ball. Don't worry, remixers, the ball isn't until March 5, so this isn't breaking rules!

I'm super excited about my outfit for tomorrow. It's going to be snazzy.

Let the Food Times Roll!

This weekend, my parents came up from Stuttgart for a visit. Mom and I got our nails done while dad took care of some car stuff, then we just hung out at my house and relaxed. I love hearing my dad's "war" stories and talking about TV shows and celebrity gossip with my mom.

To cap off the day, we went to one of my favorite childhood restaurants, a small Italian restaurant called Bella Capri. I remember going there when I was 13 and talking to one of dads' coworkers' sons about Nintendo Power magazine while eating rigatoni alla panna. The food was still as delicious as I remember.

One step up from mirror photo is mom photo. This is my main foyer, which I have newly decorated and am so in love with. I know I wore these jeans and blazer yesterday, but I don't care. Dad joked that I needed a bigger belt and mom said I've had this shirt since middle school. I guess it was from my "goth" phase. I probably haven't worn it since middle school, so it's a good thing I put it in my remix choices.

On Fridays, if our leadership is gone and it's going to be a quiet day, we wear jeans. Today I decided to dress it up a bit and add a blazer and belt to a shirt I normally wear by itself. I *almost* wore my purple boots, but I think it would have been too matchy-matchy, so on went the boots.

It was a pretty successful outfit... another one of my guy coworkers asked me if I had been losing weight and that I look great, so I guess if a guy notices, then it's true.

Also, I have decided to replace one of my black shirts with a Hello Kitty t-shirt because I tried the black shirt on today and it was so well loved that it ripped. *sigh* I really need to go through my clothes and part with the ones I've just worn too much. Prepare for the funeral, folks.

I kind of had fun with this outfit today. I normally wear the skirt way lower and with a shirt over it. The shirt I wore today actually is more of a shirt dress, but I liked the way it looked under the skirt. Today when one of my coworkers saw me, he said "You look completely WOW today." :-)

So I rate Day 1 a 9 out of 10.

So I've just signed up to join the 30 for 30 challenge starting February 1. You can read about it here.

I recently cleaned out my closet and discovered several new ways to mix up things I already had. I've been in a comfort zone lately, only wearing things I *know* look good, but I've lost 30lbs in the past few months and I think it's time to start exploring different outfit options, since I'm becoming more confident with my body. Plus, it will be interesting to document each outfit and see how my style/creativity is honed as the days go by.

D Family Christmas

Last year I had just gotten to Germany, therefore I was all by myself on Christmas. It was pretty tough, Skyping with my parents and friends back in the states while I ate canned soup and watched a "Moonlighting" marathon on British television. Now that my parents live here too, about an hour from me, they decided that this year will be Epic Christmas of 2009/2010. Let the picture show begin:

We woke around 0700, due to hungry kittens, and discovered that it snowed a TON overnight. You can't really see it from the picture, but it was still snowing. I think it's still snowing now.

We all got some lovely gifts, but the highlight for me was the set of Betsey Johnson necklaces. She's my favorite. Dad and I got mom a carved wood Bookkeeper that she got teary about, so I think she liked it.

After we were done ripping into the gifts, the cats felt the need to inspect every piece of wrapping paper and empty box.

Then, while dad cleaned up the wrapping paper remnants, mom and I made our traditional homemade donuts.

After a short rest, we decided to venture out into the snow. This is the only time I like snow; when I don't have to drive in it.

My parents have a castle in their town. I love that they put a tree on the very top of it.

Later in the day, mom made our usual Christmas dinner of ham, garlic potatoes, and green bean casserole. Does anyone else put cheese in theirs? It's amazing that way.

We ended the night with apple pie (not pictured, we ate it too fast to capture on camera) and Skyping with my Aunt, Uncle, and cousins.

Merry Christmas everyone. I hope yours was as warm as mine.

I'd like to think my positivity is what makes me "beautifully different." I am mercilessly positive about things. I also love to make people laugh; I feel that I've got an "in" if I make someone laugh and that's usually how I break the ice when I'm meeting new people.

Community. Where have you discovered community, online or otherwise, in 2010? What community would you like to join, create, or more deeply connect with in 2011?

In the past two months, I have become friends with some of the best people in Heidelberg. I've been lucky enough to find a group of people that I have a ton in common with and that I can have fun with doing just about anything, from going out drinking to staying in and playing board games.
Next year, I hope I can cultivate these friendships even more and go on more adventures with them!

Make. What was the last thing you made? What materials did you use? Is there something you want to make, but you need to clear some time for it?

I've made quite a few things lately, to include cupcakes and an ugly Christmas sweater, but the thing I'm most proud of is my Halloween costume. I went as a peacock:
The dress was $10 at the Gap, I bought it about 5 years ago. I put an Old Navy shrug over it.

The hat was made out of a piece of felt, hot glued at the back and black pipe cleaners hot glued to the crease.

The tail was made from teal blue material, cut into a feather pattern. Then I hot glued felt circles on the ends of the feathers and used black pipe cleaners and black Sharpie to make the lines. Then I glued PVC pipes to the sides and some of the lines, connecting the bottom part to the pink and white belt.

It was a good design because it also folded down into a tail that I could bend down by my legs. The only downside was that when the tail was up, I had to walk sideways to get through doors and I kept knocking into people. It made for a memorable evening.

Let Go. What (or whom) did you let go of this year? Why?

I let go of the man I was in a relationship with for almost a year. I won't go into details, but I will say that long distance relationships rarely work. I also truly believe that he wasn't the one I was meant to be with, so in the end it was the best decision I could have made. Of course, there are always moments when I regret my actions, or think maybe it could have turned out differently, but I have to trust in myself that everything happens for a reason.

I'm still pretty much in awe that I'm living my dream in Germany. Each day was a new experience for me, especially when I was on the road so much. There were three weeks in July and August that I probably saw over 5,000 people and was able to see how what I was a part of was affecting them.

I'm back. It's been way too long and to be honest, I've been using Facebook to fill the void that blogging once took care of.
I'm sort of participating in Reverb 10, which will be my best way to catch you up on the last year of my life.

December 3- Moment. Pick one moment during which you felt most alive this year. Describe it in vivid detail (texture, smells, voices, noises, colors).

I always feel most alive at concerts. The initial rush of the crowd as the main event mans the stage, the screaming that beats through your heart louder than the bass chords, people touching you, thrumming with your body as you lose yourself in that one perfect song. Them Crooked Vultures made that moment for me. Josh Homme, with his swively Elvis hips and Dave Grohl, my hero for years, they made me feel alive in that Luxembourg arena, screaming lyrics with a crowd that spoke more languages than the United Nations. Everyone was equal, we all knew the music, that was our common thread. No worries about offending anyone, hurting anyone, just losing yourself in perfect rhythms.

I've been craving peanut butter since the first day word of the salmonella scare broke out. I kind of obsessed about eating peanut butter, or not eating peanut butter, and how much peanut butter I had really been eating before we all found out it may be dangerous to do so.

Thing is, I still haven't eaten any peanut butter. It's probably been a few months. Do I miss peanut butter? Sure. Would I still be eating it even if it hadn't made the news? Probably. Could I live without peanut butter? Most likely. Do I want to? Not really. Would I have thought about peanut butter this much if it wouldn't have been on the news? Absolutely not.

I recently got a new camera and I had been dying to try it out. I took it with me to NYC, but really had a hard time finding organic photographs out of the numerous museum exhibits I visited. One of my best friends, Terra, asked me to take a few shots of her, so her clients actually know what she looks like. I quickly agreed and off to a studio in Rockville we went (Conor too!!). I soon realized, as we were bouncing around the studio, listening to loud music, laughing at silliness, and taking fantastic photographs (more on her end... but still), I realized that this was really what I had been craving. This camera was my peanut butter. I lived without it for so long that once I had a taste of it, I realized what I had been missing.

Let's just hope I don't get sick from it...

Basically, I didn't leave the hotel for eight days. At least it was the Hilton Anatole, which is a mini-city in itself.
The highlight of my week was watching two groundskeepers chase a gigantic opossum around the park with a giant stick.
I'm tired, I am so sick of talking about work, and I am really, really ready for the holidays... and what will (hopefully) happen after they are over.

1. Sometimes I secretly think I got a degree in English only because it meant I would fill my shelves with really interesting, fascinating books.
2. I believe that a book should not only BE read, but LOOK read as well. I crack the binding, I fold the corners of a page over to keep my place, and I leave books in random places. There's no sense in leaving such a tangible item untouched.
3. I've been writing a book in my head since I was 13. I'm afraid that once I start putting it on paper, it will lose it's appeal to me.
4. I can't write poems or papers on the computer. I've got notebooks filled with handwritten bits of lines and paragraphs that I then transfer to the stark white screen. There's nothing organic about typing things out on an electric board.
5. I have a gigantic collection of Archie comics and Babysitter's Club books.
6. When I was in elementary school, I would always make my mom read the ending of any book involving animals and if they died, I wouldn't read it. That's why I have never, to this day, read Old Yeller.

To be honest...

My writing has been on the fritz since I graduated from college. I haven't written a poem in ages and I'm beginning to think that I need a swift kick in the rear to get my writing back in gear.
I've had so many other ventures running through my mind, like opening my own bakery, finding a job that will take me back to Germany, and shooting the pilot to my and Colva's future reality television show.
Yesterday, my friends and I went to Smith & Wollensky for Wine Week. $10 and basically all the wine you can drink. It was the first time in a long time that I was out with people, not caring about anything but having fun. I've been so wrapped up in work and work and, well, work, that I hadn't taken the time to go out and actually enjoy myself.
We started at noon and didn't stop until midnight. I haven't drank that much since my Los Angeles trip in January.
Speaking of Los Angeles, I am HIGHLY looking forward to my trip this coming October. Terra has graciously decided to accompany me and I do believe it will be a spectacular event. We may not even come back.
I'm starting to realize that as I get closer to knowing what I really want to do with my life, the harder it is for me to actally get up and do it. I've become the world's most practical person and I don't like it. My urge to pack up and just drive off into the sunset is with me every single day, has been for the past year. But then I start thinking about all of the repercussions, like what about my job? And what about money? And where will I live? How will I make new friends? What if I don't get a job in my new city?
My friends are always telling me I think about things too much, but it's how I am. I overanalyze, going through each and every possible situation until I've exhausted my brain and don't even want to deal with certain situations anymore.

This entry is all over the place. I sort of thing it fits my current brain situation.

Integrity.
This word has tested my patience for the past three months. It's not that I have a problem with it. Actually, I find myself to be filled with the word. Filled so much, in fact, that when I see people lacking it, I am disgusted.
Dictionary.com defines it as: adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.
The phrase that sticks out to me here is "moral character." This, to me, is your core. A person's moral character is all they've got. No matter how many things they say or do, in the end all that's left is your character.
Lately I have been faced with several occasions that have tested not only my moral character, but my integrity as well. I can't get into it, especially over the internet, but let's just say that I'm about to use my moral character to kick some integrity into a few certain people.

It's such a shame that at this day and age, no one can do anything for themselves. The people that do things right, with integrity and a respectable character end up sitting in the dust, confused at what just happened. Where do we draw the line? How can we say something's being done wrong without looking like a brown-noser?
Is there no integrity anymore? I'd like to think that answer is no, but with some of the things I see and hear, not only in my own life but on the news, in the papers, even in the tabloids, make me think our society is going down the toilet.

If our prospective Democratic Presidential Candidates can't discuss an issue without airing the others' dirty laundry, how are we expected to follow suit and come to the correct decision? Moral character comes into play here, obviously. If one stops though, would the other follow suit? Would the tortoise beat the hare?
I may ask a lot of questions, but if I could find the answers that pleased me, this world would be in a much better place.

It hit me when I was brushing my teeth. I had recently purchased some toothpaste based upon the fact that it was pink. As I ran the toothbrush over my tongue, I realized that the cough syrupy taste was not enough to overcome the fact that what was in my mouth was pink.
My life has become this obsession. Under hobbies I currently list: robots, Pomeranians, cupcakes, and anything pink.
Does this really define me as a person?
When I see someone, do I automatically wonder what their hobbies are? No. In fact, lately all I seem to care about is where they work, who they work for, and I estimate how much I think they make in a year. This corporate world that I have been privy to for a good 3 years has made me numb to the fact that hey, maybe one of my coworkers likes electronics as much as I do or wait, hey maybe they like the same musical artists that I crank up in my new car stereo.
Instead I work 12 hours a day, come home and sleep. The weekends involve drinking and playing board games with friends that I love dearly, but are in the same situation as I am. Do they realize it as much as I do? I hope so. What are we doing about it though?

I've outgrown this city. It's not letting me grow into who I'm becoming. My number one interest right now is applying for jobs. I've applied to everything. Everywhere. I sat there contemplating a trip to Kuwait before my conscience got the best of me. Am I really that desperate to get out of NoVa? I hesitate to write my gut answer.

I'm stuck in a rut. I try to bake. I try to write. I try to do my collages.
Nothing I do feels organic. It's forced, as though I'm being graded on my work. By peers, parents, friends, coworkers. I want to get out of here and re-create myself. Make something of myself besides making a shit-ton of money with nothing to show for it.

I guess this is what I get for being alone all day.

I don't understand how people can't take care of themselves. Seriously.
Today, instead of doing work at home, which I should (not) have been doing, I decided to watch some of the "What Not To Wear" marathon on TLC.
Honestly, why can't people not look like idiots?
I used to be of the mindset that wntw was just a show to make everyone look the same, but I have since retracted that statement.
It's a show to make you feel better about yourself. All of these people have such low self esteem, it's amazing to see how much change can occur in an hour long program. Amazing.

In other news, Terra and I finally had our photo shoot. Serena kindly lent us her apartment and I had the best time ever. Pics are up on myspace/fb if you want to see. She hasn't finished editing most of them, but she gave me some to whet my appetite until the others are done. Terra is such an amazing photographer, it was really an honor to work with her. We did a 50s style pinup shoot and we played around with color (red/white and pink) and setting (couch/kitchen). The ones I've seen so far are amazing and I cannot wait to see the others!

Hopefully this week will go by fast, seeing as how my birthday is in one week exactly. I've got some fantastic celebratory events occurring next weekend, it's going to be awesome.

I've stopped making promises. I have no idea where I'll be next week, much less next month. I need to actually make my mind up before I start saying things to people that I want to mean it to.

I've stopped worrying so much about my alcohol intake. Ali's birthday night really made me realize that I don't want to end up on the next season of Bad Girls Club. I may drink 3 or 4 nights out of the week, but I in no way want to drink to that much excess, ever again. Even on my birthday.

I've stopped trusting people as much as I used to. I tend to get too wrapped up in the fact that I've got a friend and we've got a lot in common that I seem to forget that not everyone is as lovely as I am.

I've stopped caring about whether or not I get enough sleep at night. Three hours doesn't make any difference from eight and I don't seem to be any less productive with either amount.

I've stopped caring about certain people, period. If someone's that intent on hypocritically defending themselves, who am I to stop them?

These "stoppages" may seem very pessimistic, but they're not. I'm going out with the old and in with the new, positive, cupcakey Allie. Don't fuck it up for me! :-)

I'm planning on taking my self portrait this evening, when I'm all hipstered out. I did have an ambitious idea though to post a poem a day as well as a portrait. It probably won't work, but for now I think I'll post a poem for today anyway.
It's the finished product of the sonnet I was working on in picture #4:

Independent Mindset

Then sometimes he plays guitar
and the world is enveloped by his
chords. Thrumming and chaotic,
it feels like the silence of a singular
heartbeat during the first collision
of your feet to water. Almost exotic,
floating like blonde hair,
making you wonder in comparison,
even in a microacoustic
sense, if the rest of you looks that supernatural. Where
the strings are connected to his
fingers are connected to our breaths,
makes it a hard differentiation
as to where these three separate beings need resuscitation.
